We Can Bring the Pressure Down

Households in Boulder are stressed. It's been too expensive here for too long.

Now homes and businesses are enduring power shutoffs. High-wind red flag days that can bring fast-moving fires into town are increasing. Last week BVSD announced plans to close three schools in Boulder and consolidate others.

Our community is carrying a lot. Some comes from decades of under-investing in our energy grid and infrastructure for hotter, more stressful weather. Some is from an unequal economy that doesn’t provide living wages, affordable healthcare, affordable childcare, and the other essential care we need at every stage of life.

These pressures don't have quick fixes. But they do have solutions—if we're clear-eyed about the challenges, visionary about the changes we need, and practical about getting things done.

And if our community comes together with the innovation, determination, and self-reliance Boulder is known for, to build new paths and new systems together.

My council cohort, with community partners, has been building the systems we need going forward:

More responsive housing. A first phase of red tape cut for local development. A long-term financial strategy. A serious, durable fix for potholes. Safeguards against Xcel's coal ash at the edge of town. A strategic plan to drive down bike theft. A new vision and commitment to community-wide wildfire protection.

That and more is under way. We, along with the next council, need to keep moving these initiatives forward and build on them.

I'm running for re-election to bring years of experience to help bring our community together and adapt to a world it wasn't built for, so Boulder can work for everyone, now and in the future.

Boulder Reporting Lab says I’m well-liked by fellow council-members. They also note my endorsers include U.S. Senator Michael Bennet and state Representative Junie Joseph.

The Daily Camera has called out my attention to affordability, boosting the local economy, and problem-solving for declining BVSD enrollment.

Mark Wallach, who recently resigned from City Council in protest of decisionmaking about the airport — essentially, too big of a decision with not enough long-term thinking — says the council is on the right track with wildfire. According to Mark, Council’s move to initiate community-wide wildfire protections is the right response, and the scale of scale of ambition might surprise you.
